How Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Differs From Breast Augmentation

When considering breast procedures, the choice often depends on whether the goal is to enhance size or improve position and shape. Many individuals compare a breast lift with breast augmentation, and while both procedures can improve the appearance of the breasts, they address different concerns.

The Role of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation focuses on increasing breast volume. This can be achieved through the placement of implants or, in selected cases, fat grafting. We typically discuss this option with individuals who feel their breasts are smaller than desired or who have experienced volume changes following weight loss or breastfeeding.

The main objective of augmentation is to enhance fullness. It may improve the contour of the upper breast and create a more proportionate silhouette. However, augmentation alone does not significantly address breast drooping. In some cases, adding volume without correcting sagging may place additional strain on the skin over time.

The Role of Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is designed to improve the position and shape of the breasts rather than increase their size. Over time, factors such as aging, gravity, and pregnancy can affect skin elasticity, leading to a lower breast position.

During the procedure, we remove excess skin and reshape the surrounding tissue to support a more lifted contour. The nipple and areola are also repositioned to align with the new breast shape. This option may be suitable for individuals who are comfortable with their breast size but would like a firmer and more elevated appearance.

Key Differences at a Glance

The main distinction between the two procedures lies in their purpose:

  • Volume: Breast augmentation increases size but does not significantly reposition breast tissue.
  • Position: A breast lift repositions and reshapes the breasts but does not add volume.

In some cases, we may recommend combining both procedures. A lift with augmentation can address both reduced volume and sagging, depending on individual needs and goals.
