What are prominent ears?
Prominent ears refer to a condition where the ears protrude or extend from the head more than usual. This condition usually develops during childhood and has no effect on hearing.However, the presence of prominent ears can affect self-confidence. A surgery can be done to correct the position of the ear and can be done at all ages.
What is the correction procedure like?
Otoplasty refers to surgery done on the ears to correct various deformities or ear conditions, including prominent ears. During the procedure, an incision is made behind the ear, and the ear is pulled back in order to bring it closer to the head and creating a more natural appearance. The incision is then sutured to close it.
Otoplasty is usually performed as a day surgery procedure, meaning you may return home on the same day. Post-surgery, compression bandages will need to be worn for a few days. Although some downtime is to be expected, our clinic will provide the necessary medication and support to ensure a smooth recovery.

Who is an ideal candidate for otoplasty?
Patients who are seeking to correct the position of their ears may be interested in otoplasty.
How should I prepare for the surgery?
Prior to the surgery, you may need to stop taking blood thinning medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen, or other supplements. Do inform our surgeon if you are currently on such medication. Smoking and other forms of nicotine should also be avoided 4-6 weeks before surgery, as this can hinder the healing process.
Are there any side effects associated with the surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with otoplasty. These include bleeding, infection and poor wound healing in the initial recovery period. Our surgeon will take all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of these complications. You can also minimize adverse reactions by following post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments regularly.
Will otoplasty leave scarring?
As otoplasty involves incisions to adjust and repair the ear, there will be some scarring present. However, they are usually placed behind the ear so scars will usually not be easily visible. We will advise you on how to take care of the wound for proper healing and advise on scar management after.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery from otoplasty is relatively quick, with most patients able to return to their daily activities within 1-2 weeks. There may be some swelling and bruising present immediately after surgery but should subside after some time.
What is needed for post-surgical care?
Depending on the procedure, compression bandages will need to be worn to keep the ear position in place. A head band can be used once dressings are no longer needed over the wounds.
Can I file an insurance claim for this procedure?
Usually, this surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure. However, if otoplasty is done for medical reasons, our clinic will be able to assist you with direct insurance e-filing and Medisave claims.

Torn earlobes and enlarged earholes are conditions faced especially by women who wear heavy earrings and other pierced ear accessories that can place strain on the earlobes. Torn earlobes can also arise as a result of thin earlobes, or other injuries that result in trauma to the ear.
Repair of torn or enlarged earlobes is usually performed as a day surgery procedure under local anaesthesia, meaning you will be able to return home on the same day. In the case of torn earlobes, any excess skin is removed, and the earlobes are sutured back together to reconstruct its original shape. For enlarged earholes, the entire earhole is excised and repair is performed separately both on the front and back of the earlobe. Recovery is expected to be relatively quick. However, it is advised to wait until the wound is fully healed before re-piercing the earlobe.
