Breast Augmentation Surgery

What is breast augmentation?

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure carried out to enhance and enlarge the breasts. This surgery is an option for individuals who want to increase their breast size, or to restore breast volume and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. A breast augmentation can create a more prominent cleavage, improve how clothing fits, as well as boost self-confidence, helping patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

Breast augmentation is typically performed using silicone breasts implants. In some suitable patients, breast augmentation with fat grafting may also be possible, where fat is taken from another part of the patient’s body and used as a natural alternative in lieu of a silicone implant. Fat grafting is more suitable for those looking for minor breast enhancements, which may involve correcting the breasts’ shape and symmetry. A consultation with our surgeon will help in deciding which procedure is suitable for you, depending on your personal needs.

Breast augmentation with implants can be performed in combination with a breast lift in women who have droopy (ptotic) breasts. Breast augmentation can also be performed as part of corrective surgery for women who have congenital chest wall defects, or women who have asymmetrical breasts.

What should I expect from a breast augmentation procedure?

What should I expect from a breast augmentation procedure?

If you are considering a breast augmentation, a detailed consultation with our plastic surgeon is needed. During this consultation, she will address your specific concerns and perform a thorough examination to understand your aesthetic goals, and work with you to determine the most suitable procedure and implant type for your body, as well as discuss post-surgery care.

During surgery, an incision will usually be made under the breast. In select cases, it may be possible for incisions to be made under the arm or around the nipple. Once the incision is made, breast tissue and muscle are separated from the tissue in your chest, which creates a space for an implant to be inserted. Once the implant is placed, the skin is sutured together and the wound covered.

Breast augmentation is usually performed as a day surgery procedure under general anaesthesia, and you will be able to return home on the same day and return to work within a week. Post-surgery, swelling and some bruising is expected, and will subside after 4-6 weeks. The implants should settle after this time, and full recovery is expected within a year. Medication will be provided to ensure a smooth recovery.

How does our surgeon determine the appropriate procedure for your body?

Taking into account your body dimensions, our surgeon will discuss your goals and desired shape, as well as your personal preferences during the initial consultation. She will explain the different types of implants, as well as the option of fat grafting. The ideal implant size is determined not only by the desired enhancement but also by your body’s unique dimensions and proportions. In addition, addition fat grafting may be considered if necessary to improve the aesthetic outcome of the procedure.

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

How should I prepare for the surgery?

Prior to the surgery, you may need to stop taking blood thinning medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen, or other supplements. Do inform our surgeon if you are currently on such medication. Smoking and other forms of nicotine should also be avoided 4-6 weeks before surgery, as this can hinder the healing process. As you will be under general anaesthesia, you should also fast from food and liquids 6 hours before the procedure.

Are there any side effects associated with the surgery?

Usually, swelling and bruising will occur after the surgery, but will subside within 2-6 weeks. As with any surgery, general risks include bleeding, infection and poor wound healing in the initial recovery period. However, there may be some other risks that can affect you during your recovery period. However, these side effects can be avoided through careful management post-surgery, such as by wearing compression garments that can support the breasts.

Will there be scarring?

As incisions will need to be made to insert the implants, there will be some scarring after the surgery. However, our surgeon will take special care to place incisions in less visible areas to reduce the appearance of scars. We will also guide you on how to take care of the wound for proper healing and advise on scar management after.

How long does recovery take?

In the first few days after surgery, swelling, bruising and tightness are expected as the body heals. You may be able to return to light work after a week, and swelling should subside after 2-6 weeks. At this point, light exercise can be resumed. After 3-6 months, the shape of the breast will have settled in nicely.

What is needed for post-surgical care?

Immediately after surgery, you should rest and avoid strenuous activities to allow your body to heal. Compression garments should also be worn to support the breasts. Medication will be provided by the clinic to help you manage any pain that might arise after the procedure.

Can I file an insurance claim for this procedure?

Most breast augmentations are performed for cosmetic reasons. However, if the breast augmentation is done for medical reasons, our clinic will be able to assist you with direct insurance e-filing and Medisave claims.
