What is Rhinoplasty?

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty refers to plastic surgery that changes the shape and appearance of one’s nose, and can be done for cosmetic reasons, or to alleviate difficulties in breathing. Common reasons for rhinoplasty include repair of a deviated septum, or general disproportionality of the nose to the rest of the face. The nose comprises cartilage and bone, and each rhinoplasty procedure is individually tailored to the unique features of one’s nose.

What is the procedure like for a rhinoplasty?

What is the procedure like for a rhinoplasty?

As rhinoplasty is customised to each patient’s needs, the procedure for each surgery differs from person to person. For example, excess cartilage may be removed to reshape the nose, and bone surgery can also be used to correct issues such as a prominent nose bridge. Some patients may require implants or additional cartilage taken from elsewhere on the body to achieve the shape they desire.

A closed rhinoplasty refers to a procedure where all incisions are made within the nostrils, and this is suitable for minor adjustments to the nose shape. On the other hand, an open rhinoplasty involves an incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) for better access to the nasal structure. This is suitable for more extensive adjustments and reshaping. The type of rhinoplasty performed is dependent on the extent of reshaping, as well as the unique structure of your nose.

If you are interested in a rhinoplasty, a consultation with our surgeon is important as she will tailor a suitable treatment plan to both your anatomy and goals for the surgery. After surgery, there will be swelling present for around 4-6 weeks. Most of the swelling should subside after around 3 months, and the full effects of the surgery will take around a year after all swelling goes away.

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is an ideal candidate for this procedure?

Rhinoplasty is suitable for patients who want to adjust the shape of their nose either for aesthetic reasons, or to improve their breathing quality due to a deviated septum or other nasal passage deformities. In cases where there may be breathing or airway issues, the surgery can be performed in conjunction with an ENT surgeon.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

Prior to the surgery, you may need to stop taking blood thinning medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen, or other supplements. Do inform our surgeon if you are currently on such medication. Smoking and other forms of nicotine should also be avoided 4-6 weeks before surgery, as this can hinder the healing process. If the procedure is done under general anaesthesia, you should also fast from food and liquids 6 hours beforehand.

Are there any side effects associated with the surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with rhinoplasty. These include bleeding, infection and poor wound healing in the initial recovery period. Our surgeon will take all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of these complications. You can also minimize adverse reactions by following post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments regularly.

Will this surgery leave scarring?

A closed rhinoplasty will not leave any visible scarring, as all incisions are made within the nostril. An open rhinoplasty does involve an incision on the exterior of the nose, but scarring will be minimal. Our surgeon will take special care to ensure that you have the best resulting scar possible, through meticulous wound closing and post-operative care. We will advise you on how to take care of the wound for proper healing and advise on scar management after.

How long does recovery take?

The wound typically takes around 1-2 weeks to heal. Swelling will be present for 4-6 weeks but should mostly subside within 1-3 months.

What is needed for post-surgical care?

For the first few days after surgery, you should avoid blowing your nose and limit facial movements to reduce stress on the nasal cavity. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 4-6 weeks to allow your nose to recover well.

Can I file an insurance claim for this procedure?

Rhinoplasty performed purely to improve the aesthetic appearance will be considered a cosmetic procedure. However, if the rhinoplasty is done for functional improvement, it may be considered medical in nature. If the rhinoplasty is performed for medical reasons, our clinic will be able to assist you with direct insurance e-filing and Medisave claims.
