Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): What It Corrects and Risks
The eyes are often one of the most noticeable facial features and may show early signs of aging. Over time, the skin around the eyelids can lose elasticity, which may lead to a heavy or tired appearance. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that may be considered to address these concerns and, in some cases, improve peripheral vision.
What Does Eyelid Surgery Address?
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on individual needs. It may address both functional and aesthetic concerns.
- Upper Eyelid Concerns – With time, excess skin may develop on the upper eyelids, sometimes creating a “hooded” appearance. In certain cases, this may affect the field of vision. The procedure may involve removing excess skin and, where appropriate, adjusting underlying tissue to improve the eyelid contour.
- Lower Eyelid Concerns – Common concerns in the lower eyelids include puffiness or “eye bags,” often related to fat deposits or skin laxity. Surgery may help to improve the contour between the lower eyelid and the cheek area.
- Functional Considerations – Some individuals experience discomfort such as a feeling of heaviness in the upper eyelids or reduced peripheral vision due to excess tissue. In selected cases, eyelid surgery may help address these concerns.
Risks and Considerations

All surgical procedures carry potential risks. For eyelid surgery, these may include temporary swelling, bruising, dryness, or irritation of the eyes. These effects are usually temporary and can be managed with appropriate care.
Less common risks may include infection, difficulty fully closing the eyelids, or changes in sensation. During consultation, we assess your medical history and eye health to determine suitability and discuss potential risks in detail.
The Recovery Process
Recovery from eyelid surgery is generally gradual. Swelling and bruising are common in the initial phase and typically improve over one to two weeks.
We provide post-operative care instructions, which may include the use of cold compresses and keeping the head elevated to support healing. Many individuals can return to light activities within a few days, while more strenuous activities are usually resumed after a period advised during consultation.
