Repair of rectus divarication

Rectus Divarication

What is rectus divarication?

What is rectus divarication?

Rectus divarication or diastasis refers to the separation of the left and right core muscles, leaving a gap. It can appear as a bulge in the abdominal wall, making one appear “fat” even after weight loss, or after pregnancy.

Diastasis or divarication of the rectus muscles is a common outcome of pregnancy, particularly if the baby was large, if the woman had had more than one pregnancy, or if the woman had multiple babies in one pregnancy. In such cases, the abdominal wall can get so stretched out that they lose their elasticity and the ability to retract back to their original state.

This problem of rectus divarication if left uncorrected for a long period of time, can give rise to other medical conditions like back pain from poor posture trying to balance the bulge. Core muscle strength is also reduced.

How does rectus divarication occur?

How does rectus divarication occur?

The left and right core (rectus) muscles are connected by a band of tissue known as the linea alba.

During pregnancy, the two core muscles split apart to accommodate expanding uterus in the abdominal cavity. The abdominal wall stretches out and lose their elasticity. Under normal circumstances, the tissue is able to return to its original size as it is highly elastic and will retract. However, in some cases, this tissue is unable to retract and results in the separation of the left and right core (rectus) muscles.

Rectus divarication is a common side effect of pregnancy, particularly if the baby was large, if the woman has had more than one pregnancy, or if the woman had multiple babies in one pregnancy.

What can be done to improve rectus divarication?

What can be done to improve rectus divarication?

Mild cases of rectus divarication can be improved by exercise and physiotherapy. However, severe cases may require surgery to address the problem by stitching the core muscles back together. This is usually performed along with a tummy tuck procedure. Excess skin is removed after the abdominal muscles are stitched together, tightening the abdominal wall which removes the appearance of the bulge, giving the abdominal area a flatter appearance. In addition to external contour improvements, this surgery helps to relieve pain caused by poor posture.

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is an ideal candidate for this procedure?

If you are unable to correct rectus divarication through means such as exercise and physiotherapy, this surgery may be suitable for you.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

Prior to the surgery, you may need to stop taking blood thinning medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen, or other supplements. Do inform our surgeon if you are currently on such medication. Smoking and other forms of nicotine should also be avoided 4-6 weeks before surgery, as this can hinder the healing process. As you will be under general anaesthesia, you should also fast from food and liquids 6 hours before the procedure.

Are there any side effects associated with the surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with rectus divarication correction surgery. These include bleeding, infection and poor wound healing in the initial recovery period. Our surgeon will take all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of these complications. You can also minimize adverse reactions by following post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments regularly.

Will this surgery leave scarring?

As incisions will be made to reconnect the core muscles and to perform the tummy tuck procedure, there will be some scarring. However, our surgeon will take special care to place incisions in less visible areas to reduce the appearance of scars. We will also advise you on how to take care of the wound for proper healing, and advise on scar management later.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time should be similar to that of an abdominoplasty procedure, typically involving a down time of about 2 weeks for wound healing. Strenuous activities should be limited for 4-6 weeks post-surgery.

What is needed for post-surgical care?

After surgery, you should avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a few weeks to allow your body time to rest and recover. Compression garments will be required for up to 6 weeks to help control swelling and support to the operated area as it heals. Medication will be provided by the clinic to help you manage any pain and swelling that may arise after the procedure.

Can I file an insurance claim for this procedure?

In certain cases, repair of rectus divarication may be considered medically necessary. If this procedure is done for medical reasons, our clinic will be able to assist you with direct insurance e-filing and Medisave claims.
